Massornas tid: Massan som hot och hopp i modern europeisk historia

Abstract

Projektet analyserar “massan” som sociologisk kategori, politisk idé och estetisk fantasi från franska revolutionen till i dag. Massan är ett dominerande tema i europeisk modernitet, vilket i dag återuppstår under nya förtecken i form av hotbilder av tredje världens militanta underklass. Projektet diskuterar den så kallade masspsykologin, en produkt av 1890-talets Frankrike, som präglade dåtidens samhällsvetenskaper men också speglade dess politiska fördomar. Bilden av folket och de lägre samhällsklasserna som en hotande “massa” antog i mellankrigstidens Europa metafysiska proportioner och blev ett civilisationsproblem som bearbetades i periodens samhällsteori och kultur. I dessa studier undersöker projektet “massan” som en sociologisk och politisk kategori som åberopats för att verkställa kulturell integration och social exkludering. Resultaten har presenterats i boken “A Brief History of the Masses: Three Revolutions”, utgiven på Columbia University Press 2008, och i en studie med titeln “Crowds and Democracy: The Idea and Image of the Masses in German and Austrian Culture Between the Wars”, som är under utgivning.
